Kayaya was a girlfriend of Mulamba, son of a big businessman. As it is characteristic of sons of big men, Mulamba was a boyfriend of other girls, each one of them dreaming of winning him for marriage one day. Kayaya was doing her last year in university studying law when something happened to her. She missed the timing of her monthly period because Mulamba had shot a child into her. When she disclosed to him, “Mulamba, you know what? I am pregnant and you are the father of my pregnancy.” That was when he took the opportunity of dropping her. He had been warned by some friends about getting married to a lawyer, a nurse, a doctor or a policewoman. “Marry one of these and you’ll have bought yourself a lifetime nightmare.”
He denied having made her pregnant. But she threatened to take him to court even at that stage. He told her bluntly, “Do that and I’ll teach you a bitter lesson. Why don’t you wait until you give birth then let the features of the child or DNA confirm I’m the father?”

She reported the matter to her parents and the smart father went to the boyfriend’s parents with the information. He further begged whether the couple could be brought before the families to clear the air. The boyfriend thought it wasn’t a big deal, so before the families he expressed his doubt about being the father of the pregnancy. He said, “Why don’t we wait until the child is born then go for the DNA test?” When he further talked tough, the father of the girlfriend challenged, “Why don’t we finish the matter by going to a traditional court?”
“Bring it on!” The boyfriend screamed because he knew he would be the winner. “If the court finds me guilty, I’ll accept the responsibility.”
Two weeks after that meeting, the couple was called to face the traditional court. It was done in a neutral ground. Bursting with confidence, Mulamba came fully prepared with self-defence. He faced a jury of seven elders, all men. They were faces he had never seen before. Kayaya was shown where to stand before the elders.

The spokesperson called Mulamba, “Young man, thank you for accepting this court. Tell us with your own mouth whether you’ll accept the verdict of this court?” Mulamba said he would. Then the speaker asked several clearing questions before he turned to Kayaya and instructed her to take a position and stand with her legs wide apart. When she did that the speaker turned to Mulamba and said, “Young man, listen. All our eyes are turned to you. If you are sure that you are not the father of the child Kayaya is carrying, we want you to do one simple thing. Be man enough to crawl between Kayaya’s legs to the other side. If you do that successfully, simply walk away and leave us to eat our guilt.”
That was the weirdest request he had ever faced. He lowed before Kayaya whose legs were wide apart as she kept her eyes closed with her palm. He tightened his jaws while making movements as if he could accomplish the request. Everything went dead silent. Mulamba went down to his knees as if ready to accomplish the request; but he started shaking as all the eyes watched as Kayaya waited to hear Mulamba crawl through. But however much he tried to get started; he failed. He finally collapsed before her feet. Judgment made. He was guilty. A man went and struck Kayaya to open her eyes after which he collected Mulamba from the ground and escorted him with sarcasm, “Get up and remove your wife from this court.” The embarrassed and devastated Mulamba did that. They walked away silently widely apart but in the same direction. On the way he regained his strength and apologized to Kayaya.
